Statement on the Recent Killings of American Citizens by Federal Agents
Fellow Democrats,
There are times in history where right and wrong is as clear as day. What ICE is doing in Minneapolis is not just wrong. It is profoundly un-American.
ICE agents took the life of Alex Pretti for no reason but his exercise of the freedoms that our country was built on. To add insult to injury, Trump’s minions have tried to justify the actions of its agents by spinning lies about what the videos showed and by attempting to disparage and rewrite who Alex Pretti was in life.
The abuse of government power in Minneapolis in the weeks leading up to and including the killing of Alex Pretti shocks the conscience in ways I never would have believed could happen in our democracy. On the heels of the killing of Renee Good, it shows that ICE’s actions are a concerted strategy to terrorize those who would exercise their First Amendment right to peacefully protest the government. It is the systematic oppression of dissent through sanctioned violence that is the province of tyrants and dictators.
ICE’s reign of terror must end.
If you’re hurting, you are not alone. I encourage everyone who can to support Minneapolis using the resources compiled on the Stand With Minnesota page. We will honor those we’ve lost, and we will continue to fight.
In solidarity,
Chair Nancy Tung
